She grows up with the son of the owner of the manor, Mme de Bernecourt, before being separated from him when she becomes a lady in waiting. As far as the young man, Jean, is concerned, he comes back from the colonies in the company of a beautiful divorcée, Mme Lauret, whom he wishes to marry.
